Weeds are simply unwanted plants that germinate and grow in your established turfgrass areas. The most commonly found weeds in our region are dandelions, white clover, plantain, chickweed and spurge. Broadleaf weeds grow from weed seeds that have traveled from neighboring yards or from seeds in the subsurface soil that come to the surface and germinate. Weeds also grow and spread from runners of existing plants like ground ivy. They germinate and grow best in bare or thin areas of unhealthy turf. Most weeds germinate in the spring and remain in the turf through the summer. They can multiply over the years, overcoming the turf. Effective control depends upon temperature, humidity and stage of growth, so timing of treatment is important.
